For the purposes of the Fair Use provisions of the US Copyright law, I consider 4 contiguous sentences or a total of 6 sentences with no more than four being contiguous (but not to exceed 10% of the whole post) to be acceptable fair use, provided that a live link to the original source is either incorporated into the quoted material or provided immediately following each use of it. Thus, if you present 4 sentences in one location in your text and 2 more sentences separated by other material, you must attribute both instances separately and in the manner requested.
It is regrettable that many misinterpret the ability to copy as the moral right or even as an ethical imperative to copy without regard for the rights of others to benefit from their original work. Thus I am compelled to write this document, which I would rather have never written. But I need to protect not only the fruits of my own labors, but also the fruits of those others who, through grant of license, assist in my efforts and are also due a reward for their hard work and creativity.
I would also remind those who improperly use the material appearing here that nothing happens on-line that can’t be traced back to its source by a determined individual. Anonymity isn’t. But I am.
I randomly use quotes from my own material as search terms in the major search engines. If you ‘scrape’ my blog I may not catch you right away, but when I catch you it’s going to cost you.
