There was this day in third grade … There was this day in third grade …

When I had the measles or something else equally deadly and my Mom kept me home from school.

As nearly as I can tell, that was the day they took everyone down to the multi-purpose room, sat them cross-legged on the floor and explained how life works. That was the day I missed. Click here to read on, my friend.

Sometimes Windows, sometimes not Sometimes Windows, sometimes not

We’re all adults here. Well, most of us are. Usually.

Thus it should come as no surprise that I am actually going to advocate using Windows software from time to time. Specifically, some Windows programs do not have a good Linux analog just yet. Or the Linux analog is good, but misses out on a needed ‘corner case’ use. And you just happen to have previously bought the Windows-based program to cover that corner case. Or maybe your company has declared that you WILL use a particular piece of application software. Or, or, or … Life, in its endless variety, provides plenty of perfectly good reasons for a Linux user to use a Windows program. Click here to read on, my friend.

“What were they thinking?” department “What were they thinking?” department

I noticed that financial markets the world over are blaming the US for the current rocky situation in those markets. This begs what seems to me to be a perfectly reasonable question: Click here to read on, my friend.

7 Thoughts About Blogging 7 Thoughts About Blogging

I’ve spent much of my time this past year posting to this blog and a few allied with it. For the most part, the allied blogs have now been incorporated into this one. Along the way I’ve learned some lessons I’d like to share with you in my first-ever “numbered list” post. Click here to read on, my friend.

Some time back I addressed the issue of net neutrality … that anyone able to access the internet at all should be treated equally with anyone else anywhere on the planet. That is; no throttling access speeds based on what you are downloading, no keeping track of who says what.

No jackboots on the neck of free speech.

This might work out to be a long winter for the editors of financial courses and advice columns. First there is the issue of how to deny having written their previous tomes and then there is the matter of getting fresh “stuff” ready for the gullible — gotta keep those books and advisories flying off the shelves. 911 – a hoax? 911 – a hoax?

Of late, (this post was first begun in June of 2008) I’ve been quite surprised by how wide-spread the notion is that the attack on the Twin Towers in New York was actually done by the American government as a ‘false flag’ operation designed to provoke conflict. I’m not probing for this stuff … people are bringing the topic up on their own. Moreover, they are doing it ‘face to face’.

I have my own opinion about the events of that day (and since), but I thought I’d ask my viewers if they are encountering this same phenomenon of spontaneous conversations that subscribe to a conspiracy designed to provoke war in the oil-rich states of the Middle East. A little techie humor A little techie humor

I saw this in a Q&A session for a copy of Windows XP Home (OEM):

Can I wipe my harddrive with a magnet then put this in the disk tray would i then be able to download it and have it work like new?”

over at Tiger Direct and I just couldn’t resist the impulse to respond with: Click here to read on, my friend.

How large is the gap? How large is the gap?

That is, how large is the gap between your ability to read and your ability to write?

Bloggers are writers — authors, if you will. Whether we are blogging about the depths of our souls or the innermost workings of the latest electronic gadget that may never even see production, we are writers.

Would you, no matter what your occupation, like to be a better writer? Click here to read on, my friend.

Blogging with BloGTK Blogging with BloGTK

Moving to Linux involves finding alternative programs that can substitute for more familiar (and generally more expensive) Windows programs. In this review, I take a quick look at BloGTK, an offline blogging tool and find it to be quite capable. While not yet ready for center stage, it is poised in the wings awaiting its turn. If you use Linux, give BloGTK a try. If you know of a better offline blogger for Linux, please give me the ‘heads up’. Click here to read on, my friend.
