Today I bumped into an extension for Open Office that would seem to have the capability you are looking for but written for those blasted Palm thingies! (that neither of us seem to own)

http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/odt2pml

You could scan into Open Office Writer (a free download) and then export to the Palm data format. I THINK that the extension is OS independent.

Alternately, you could scan into OpenOffice and then bump things up to the internet with this:
http://extensions.services.openoffice.org/project/OoGdocsIntegrator

From that point, you could view them in your PDA browser. Not as direct as I would like, but it should be a workable kludge.

Nah ... that's not what happened. Ubuntu couldn't do anything with that trashed boot sector either. Neither could two (two!) supposed 'XP rescue' disks.

Never mind. So long as XP was already toasted, I went ahead with a full-on Linux install ... and haven't looked back since!

(So far, I have three days and 19 hours of audio back on the HD and a 1 terabyte external HD attached for a daily back up, via rsync, of the full HD.)

I use vox line hosted pbx for my phone service. I am very happy with the service
1) it saves me a ton of money
2) it give me all the features that make my business sound very good when someone calls

Argggh! David, please forgive me ... somehow your comment slipped under the radar. I only noticed it 2 minutes ago.

Let me know what you come up with, please. (I only moderate initial comments ... your next comment will post immediately.)

Just thought I'd mention that you can create an encrypted volume on any device capable of holding a file system, such as a cheap pen drive (aka USB drive). For ~$15 to ~$100 per pen drive, you can keep client details as secure as anyone.

It is so easy to encrypt data with free tools that I would consider it evidence of organic brain damage not to.

Remember, under the US Constitution, you have a RIGHT to privacy ... and, if you have a business, your clients have entrusted that right to your care. As the business owner in possession of their private data, it is your responsibility to protect their constitutional rights.

Some would claim that protecting this right is an admission of wrong-doing.
That is not true. Claiming this RIGHT is NOT an admission of wrong doing but a proper exercise of citizenship. The only way to protect the US Constitution is to use it.
